# WordPress setup

> Connect a self-hosted WordPress site with the Weelkit Plugin, save your field mapping, and verify a test draft.

Choose **WordPress** for a self-hosted site. For a site hosted on WordPress.com, use [WordPress.com setup](https://docs.weelkit.com/integrations/wordpress-com/setup.md).

## Connect a site

**1. Prepare the Weelkit Plugin**

Install the current Weelkit Plugin in WordPress. Open **Settings → Weelkit Plugin** and generate a connection token. If Weelkit asks you to update the plugin, update it before continuing setup. Version 0.6.0 or later supports bulk status checks; the version number alone does not prove compatibility.

**2. Connect in Weelkit**

Open **Organization settings → CMS**, choose **Connect CMS**, and select **WordPress**. Enter your **Site URL** and **Weelkit Plugin token**, then choose **Connect**.

**3. Choose a post type**

After the connection is saved, choose **Next**. Select the one WordPress post type Weelkit should use for articles, then choose **Next** to read its fields.

**4. Save the field mapping**

Review the suggested mappings and choose the WordPress fields for your article values. Choose **Save mapping** to save changes, or **Next** if shown. Only the saved mapping decides what Weelkit sends.

**5. Choose publishing defaults**

Set **Default status** to **Draft** or **Published**, when publishing is available for the selected type. Choose what happens **When the article already exists**: **Ask before updating**, **Always update existing**, or **Always create a new item**. Choose **Save and continue**.

**6. Verify a test draft**

Choose **Verify test draft**. Weelkit uses your saved mapping to create a temporary draft and read it back. Review the field results and inspect the draft in WordPress. You can choose **Delete draft** to remove it.

When verification succeeds, choose **Continue** to finish setup.

## Available fields

The mapping shows writable fields exposed by your selected post type and installed plugins. Registered custom metadata must be exposed through the WordPress REST API. Yoast, Rank Math and ACF fields depend on the installed definitions and your permissions.

Map the featured image and its **Alternative text**, **Caption**, **Image title** and **Description** to enable those controls in the editor. Only enabled details appear. Removing a previously sent featured image removes its association with the post; the uploaded attachment remains in WordPress.

Only fields shown in the mapping can be sent. Rank Math's separate Schema and Redirect resources, untyped serialized add-ons, and ACF gallery, flexible-content and nested-reference combinations are unavailable.

## Send an article

Open the article in the editor and choose **Send draft to CMS** or **Publish to CMS**, according to your saved default. See [Send to your CMS](https://docs.weelkit.com/articles/checks-and-publishing.md#send-to-your-cms) for updates and confirmation.

## Finish setup later

Choose **Finish later** to leave setup. The saved connection remains in **Organization settings → CMS**. Choose **Continue setup** on the connection when you are ready to resume.
