# Write and format

> Use the Weelkit editor: the title, blocks, the formatting toolbars, AI Edit, links, tables, code, images, embeds and saving.

Articles and writings open in the editor next to their chat. The editor is shared: everyone with access sees each other's changes live. To show or hide it, use **Open Editor** or **Close Editor** in the chat's top bar.

## Title

Type the title at the top of the document. Everyone with the document open sees it change as you type.

You can also rename the document from its title in the top bar: open it, choose **Rename**, type the new title, and press **Enter**.

## Add blocks

On a new, empty line, type **/** to open the block menu, then type to filter it:

| Group | Blocks |
| - | - |
| **Basic blocks** | **Paragraph**, **Bullet list**, **Numbered list**, **Blockquote**, **Divider**, **Code block**, **Table** |
| **Headings** | **Heading 1** to **Heading 6** |
| **Media** | **Image**, **YouTube embed**, **X post embed** |

Some blocks limit what they can contain. A table cell or a quotation holds text, headings and lists, but not images, embeds, code, dividers, quotations or other tables.

## Format text

The toolbar above the document has **Bold**, **Italic**, **Underline**, **Strikethrough**, **Link**, **Heading 1** to **Heading 6**, **Paragraph**, **Bullet list**, **Numbered list**, **Blockquote**, **Divider**, **Align left**, **Align center**, **Align right**, **Align justify**, **Highlight**, **Subscript**, **Superscript**, **Code block**, **Inline code**, **Clear formatting**, **Undo** and **Redo**, and buttons to insert an image, an embed or a table. Point at a button to see its name. When the editor is narrow, the rest are under **More formatting options**.

Select text to get a small toolbar with **AI Edit**, **Add Comment**, and the formats the block allows: **Bold**, **Italic**, **Underline**, **Strikethrough** and **Link**.

## Edit a passage with AI

1. Select the text and choose **AI Edit**.
2. Choose **Improve**, **Expand**, **Rewrite** or **Adjust Tone**, or type what you want in **Tell AI how to edit this...**.

The AI changes only the selected passage, and saves a new version you can [restore](https://docs.weelkit.com/articles/collaborate.md#restore-an-earlier-version) from if you change your mind.

## Links

* **From the toolbar:** choose **Link**, enter the **Link address**, and choose **Apply link**. It takes `https://`, `http://` and `mailto:` addresses.
* **From the selection toolbar:** choose **Link**, paste or type the address, and choose **Add**. It also takes links within your site, such as `/pricing`, and adds `https://` to an address like `example.com`.

Choose a link in the document to **View**, **Edit** or **Unlink** it.

## Tables

Insert a **Table** from the **/** menu or the toolbar. Then use **Table options** (**⋯** at the top right of the table) to **Add row**, **Add column**, **Delete last row**, **Delete last column** or **Delete table**.

* Choose **Add caption...** below the table to caption it.
* Use the arrow keys, or **Tab** and **Shift** + **Tab**, to move between cells.
* To remove a table, choose **Delete table**, or press **Backspace** at the start of the line after it.

## Code blocks

In a **Code block**, choose the language from the language button (**Code language**) to get syntax highlighting. **Copy** copies the block's contents. To leave the block, press **Enter** on two empty lines at its end.

## Images and embeds

* **Image:** on the **Upload** tab, drag in or choose a PNG, JPG or WEBP file. Or, on the **URL** tab, paste an image URL and choose **Add**. Add a caption below the image.
* **YouTube embed:** paste a YouTube video URL.
* **X post embed:** paste a direct link to a post on `x.com` or `twitter.com`.

To set the article's featured image, use **SEO & Metadata** instead. See [Checks and publishing](https://docs.weelkit.com/articles/checks-and-publishing.md#metadata-and-featured-image).

## Saving

Weelkit saves as you type. The status at the bottom of the editor, next to the word count, tells you where things stand:

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| A dot | Your changes are saved, or being saved. Point at it to see which. |
| **Offline** | You lost your connection. Your changes sync when you're back online. |
| **Not saved** | A save failed. The message says why, for example "Sign in again to keep saving." |
| **View only** | You can read but not edit. Ask the owner for edit access. |

If you can only comment, or the document is archived, a note at the top of the document says so.

If you try to leave before your latest changes are saved, your browser asks you to confirm.

### When the document changed elsewhere

When someone restores a version, or the AI edits the document while you have it open, your editor shows the change. Rarely, your changes can't be combined with a newer version, for example after you edited offline. Weelkit then shows the latest version and tells you:

* Choose **Copy my version** to copy your version to the clipboard, so you can paste back what you need.
* Choose **Load latest version** to continue from the latest version.

Weelkit also keeps version checkpoints automatically as you edit, and a version for every AI draft and edit. See [Restore an earlier version](https://docs.weelkit.com/articles/collaborate.md#restore-an-earlier-version).
